Bab Makkah Civil Defense Center

Redesign at the Historic Gateway of Jeddah. Inspired by by Hijazi Heritage.

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Situated at Bab Makkah, one of Jeddah’s most significant historic gateways, this project reimagines a Civil Defense facility as both a civic prototype and a cultural landmark. CDP International carried the project from pre-concept to IFC design, ensuring alignment with heritage guidelines and modern functional requirements.

The design narrative explored three architectural interpretations:

· A canopy patterned after traditional Hejazi craftsmanship, celebrating Bab Makkah’s heritage identity.
· A plaster-finished, cohesive facade designed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding historic district.

· A contemporary reinterpretation through louvers inspired by traditional parapet forms, symbolizing the adaptive resilience of Jeddah’s architecture.

Internally, the facility was programmed with prayer halls, training areas, workshops, kitchens, and dormitories, balancing operational efficiency with user comfort. Materials such as coral stone, Iroko wood, and reinterpreted traditional screen motifs root the project in the historic language of Jeddah while projecting a forward-looking civic presence.
